Sense the Spirit

Addressing climate change through mindful consumption and changing attitudes.

The Blue Ecology™ Institute Foundation (BEIF) exists to help reverse the trajectory of climate change through Blue Ecology™, an environmental approach that interweaves science with indigenous wisdom and sensing the spirit in nature.

“We incorrectly presuppose that we fully understand the triggers and dynamics of climate change, and most critically, we may be too confident in the resilience of our ways of knowing Mother Earth.”

— Michael Blackstock

Michael is a Founder, and Director of the Blue Ecology Institute Foundation and of Gitxsan/European heritage; he is a carver, visual artist, poet, forester, and mediator and has a Masters of Art degree in First Nations Studies and he has served as a member of the UNESCO-IHP Expert Advisory Group on Water and Cultural Diversity.

A purely scientific approach to our natural resources lacks the respect for the spirit in all of nature, only serving to separate us from, rather than connect us to our planet.

Peer reviewed by both Indigenous Elders and respected science journals, Blue Ecology™ provides a fresh lens on climate change solutions.

“Time was, people were content to have what they needed for a good life; now it seems–at least in the industrialised nations–that we can never have too much stuff. On our tiny planet, a society based upon ever more consumption of rapidly diminishing resources cannot be sustained, which is why we find ourselves, today, in the midst of a climate and ecological crisis.”

Bill McGuire is Professor Emeritus of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at University College London, a co-director of the New Weather Institute, and was a contributor to the 2012 IPCC report on climate change and extreme events. He writes for many publications including The Guardian, The Times, The Observer, New Scientist, Focus and Prospect, and blogs for the New Weather Institute, Scientists for Global Responsibility, Extinction Rebellion and Operation Noah.
